Culinary Union to host “Noche Cubana” on the VirginLV strike line after company tried to dismantle parts of the strike line, USC releases statement about not wanting to cross the picket line 

Las Vegas, NV -  Culinary Union to host “Noche Cubana,” a special cultural celebration on the Virgin Las Vegas picket line to honor and support striking workers. Strikers originally from Cuba will share their rich heritage with their peers through traditional cuisine, music, and show solidarity and unity on the strike line.

The day after Christmas, VirginLV strikers were once again confronted with the company’s blatant disrespect and contempt for its workers when the VirginLV management and company security tore down and took picket signs and banners in a desperate attempt to dismantle parts of the strike line.

Meanwhile, on the day of the Las Vegas Bowl in Las Vegas, the University of Southern California (USC) released the following statement after the Culinary Union had urged the Trojans to not cross the picket line.
“We are very disappointed that, during what should be a celebratory event for our hard-working football team, USC has been placed in the middle of an ongoing labor dispute as a result of a decision made by the Las Vegas Bowl several months ago. Since learning about the strike by hospitality workers, USC has repeatedly asked the Bowl for viable hotel alternatives, so that our team would not have to cross a picket line. Unfortunately, the Bowl has been unable to change hotels on such short notice. USC greatly values its longstanding relationship with our labor partners. We hope that this matter does not distract from an event that our student-athletes have worked very hard to prepare for.” - USC

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is standing in support of Culinary Union members on strike at Virgin Las Vegas, pledging not to sleep, eat, or drink at Virgin Las Vegas and calling on others to do the same: “We stand in full support of the Culinary Union workers on strike at Virgin Las Vegas. As a union of professional football players, solidarity with the labor movement is central to our values. Over the years, we’ve received invaluable support from UNITE HERE and other unions, and we proudly extend our support when called upon. We stand with the Culinary Union in their fight for a fair contract. Until the strike is resolved, we commit to not sleep, eat, or drink at Virgin Las Vegas and encourage our fans and fellow athletes to do the same.” - NFLPA

“The ruling on the field is clear: Crossing a picket line is unsportsmanlike conduct. USC has a proud football tradition, but staying at Virgin Las Vegas would be a penalty flag on their legacy. The Trojans still have time to call an audible and choose a hotel with labor peace. WHAT: “Noche Cubana” on the VirginLV strike line

WHY: 

For the first time in over 22 years, the Culinary Union is leading its longest-lasting strike in more than two decades, taking workers at Virgin Las Vegas out in an open-ended strike that began November 15th at 5:00am as workers continue fighting for a new 5-year union contract for 700 hospitality workers. Since the strike began, hundreds of striking workers and union members have maintained 24/7 picket lines at every entrance and exit along Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road around the casino property.

The Culinary Union is Nevada’s largest Latinx/Black/AAPI/immigrant organization with Virgin Las Vegas strikers who hail from over 23 different countries, including: Belize, Benin, Bulgaria, Cuba, Denmark, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Mexico, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Rwanda, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States.

One week into the strike, 57 Culinary Union members and striking workers from Virgin Las Vegas were arrested November 21, 2024 in an act of peaceful civil disobedience. The labor demonstration drew hundreds of striking workers and union members. During the Thanksgiving holiday, Culinary Union hosted food basket distribution and a holiday dinner on the picket line for strikers. Three weeks into the strike, hundreds of strikers marched to tell Virgin Las Vegas’s billionaire Canadian owners to take their 3 dimes back to Canada. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Congressional representatives Dina Titus and Steven Horsford, Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine, and other elected officials have supported workers by walking the picket line and visiting with strikers. Nearly four weeks into the strike, Culinary Union released “A Strike Song (VirginLV). One month into the strike: The NFLPA pledged to stand with strikers and called on fans and athletes to not sleep, eat, or drink at Virgin Las Vegas during the strike. Culinary Union hosted STRIKEmas on the picket line, a STRIKEmas Carnival for children of strikers, a holiday food drive-thru, and launched VirginLasVegasAlert.org. Five weeks into the strike, Culinary Union strikers picketed and delivered coal to the front doorof the company. Six weeks into the strike, USC released a statement saying that they have asked repeatedly for hotel alternatives so that the team wouldn’t have to cross a picket line, meanwhile VirginLV management and company security tried to dismantle parts of the strike line.

The contract at Virgin Las Vegas expired on June 1, 2023. For months, the Culinary Union has been reaching out to locals, venue performers, customers, investors, company board members, gaming regulators, and community allies about the strike. As the strike continues, the Culinary Union is urging tourists, venue performers, elected officials, and community allies to stay out of Virgin Las Vegas and is actively encouraging customers to cancel their reservation, check out of the property, choose a union accommodation, and eat at union restaurants.
