Celebrate: Victories for LGBTQ / DREAMERS & Juneteenth!

We fight hard every day for justice and we are never going to stop fighting for our families, but it’s also important to celebrate the victories when we win. This week there were two huge victories from the Supreme Court:
 
*The Supreme Court ruled that federal law protects LGBTQ workers from discrimination
 
The landmark ruling will extend protections to millions of workers nationwide and is a defeat for the Trump administration.
 
The Culinary Union represents thousands of LGBTQ workers and we are proud to celebrate this great victory. The LGBTQ community in the USA is made of up of approximately 1 million workers who identify as transgender and 7.1 million lesbian, gay, and bisexual workers (Source: UCLA's Williams Institute).
 
*The Supreme Court this week also blocked Trump’s attempt to end DACA
 
As the largest organization of immigrants in Nevada, the Culinary Union represents thousands of DREAMERS who keep the Las Vegas hospitality industry running. Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a huge victory for DACA recipients and our community - it sends a clear message to the Trump Administration that #HomeIsHere for 700,000 DREAMERS in this country.
 
The Culinary Union is committed to win comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. It’s important to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020 for our families. DREAMERS and Temporary Protected Status holders should have a pathway to citizenship - the next U.S. President and Senate needs to pass a law to permanently protect DREAMERS and TPS holders as we are #HereToStay.
 
*Friday, June 19th is: Juneteenth
 
As a union that is the largest organization of Black workers in Nevada, we say unequivocally that #BlackLivesMatter and want to encourage you to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.
 
Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. Nevada played an important role in bringing about the end of slavery when it joined the Union during the Civil War and supported the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
 
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that “in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” This occurred over two years after President Lincoln’s issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
 
CELEBRATE: Juneteenth Celebration at Craig Ranch Regional Park. Masks are required. Social distancing will be enforced. Wear a red union t-shirt, bring your family, and celebrate! 5 p.m., 628 W. Craig Road.

Celebre: ¡Triunfos para LGBTQ / DREAMERS y Juneteenth!

Peleamos mucho diariamente por justicia y nunca dejaremos de pelear por nuestras familias, pero también es importante celebrar las victorias cuando ganemos. Esta semana hubo dos grandes victorias de la Corte Suprema:

*La Corte Suprema dictaminó que la ley federal ampara a los trabajadores LGBTQ contra la discriminación

Este fallo de referencia les ofrecerá protección a millones de trabajadores por toda la nación y es una derrota para la administración de Trump.

La Unión Culinaria representa a miles de trabajadores LGBTQ y estamos muy orgullosos de celebrar este gran triunfo. La comunidad LGBTQ en los EE.UU. está compuesta de aproximadamente 1 millón de empleados que se identifican como transgénero, y 7.1 millones de trabajadores gay, lesbianas, y bisexuales (Fuente: Instituto Williams de la UCLA).

*Esta semana la Corte Suprema también bloqueó el intento de Trump de acabar con DACA

Como la organización de inmigrantes más grande en Nevada, la Unión Culinaria representa a miles de DREAMERS (Soñadores) que mantienen a la industria de hotelería en Las Vegas en marcha. El fallo emitido hoy por la Corte Suprema es una gran victoria para los beneficiarios de DACA y nuestra comunidad – le envía un mensaje claro a la administración de Trump de que aquí está el hogar (#HomeIsHere) de 700 mil DREAMERS que residen en este país.

La Unión Culinaria está comprometida a que se logre una reforma migratoria completa y un camino hacia la ciudadanía para 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados. Es muy importante votar el día de las elecciones, que es el martes, 3 de noviembre del 2020, por nuestras familias. Los DREAMERS y beneficiarios de Estatus de Protección Temporal deberían tener una vía para llegar a ser ciudadanos – el próximo presidente y Senado de los EE.UU. necesitan promulgar una ley que permanentemente proteja a los DREAMERS y personas con TPS ya que estamos aquí para quedarnos (#HereToStay).

*Viernes, 19 de junio es: Juneteenth

Como el sindicato que es la organización más grande de trabajadores negros en Nevada, decimos inequívocamente que las vidas de los negros importan (#BlackLivesMatter) y lo queremos animar a usted a celebrar el final de la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos

Celebrándose cada año el 19 de junio, Juneteenth es la celebración más antigua que se conoce del final de la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos. Nevada tuvo un rol importante en llevar a cabo dicho final cuando entró a la Unión Americana durante la Guerra Civil y apoyó la ratificación de la 13ª Enmienda.

El 19 de junio de 1865, los soldados de la Unión Americana dirigidos por el General Gordon Granger pisaron tierra en Galveston, Texas con la noticia de que había terminado la Guerra Civil y de que “de acuerdo a la proclamación del Ejecutivo de los Estados Unidos, todos los esclavos son libres.” Esto ocurrió más de dos años después de que el Presidente Lincoln dictara la Proclamación de Emancipación.
