STATEMENT by Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge regarding Senator Catherine Cortez Masto’s re-election:
The Culinary Union congratulates Senator Catherine Cortez Masto on her re-election to the United States Senate. Senator Cortez Masto is a champion for working families and Culinary Union is proud to have run the largest political program in Nevada to defend and deliver Democratic control of the U.S. Senate.
UNITE HERE’s Culinary Union achieved a major milestone by running the largest and strongest political program in Nevada. Statewide, 450 Culinary Union canvassers knocked on over 1 million doors and had over 175,000 conversations with voters. The political team knocked on the doors of more than half of Black and Latinx voters and more than a third of the AAPI voters in Reno and Las Vegas.
Culinary Union was proud to get out the vote for Senator Cortez Masto and pro-worker political leaders who have been elected and re-elected this Midterm. Culinary Union continues to the largest cure effort statewide to ensure Nevadans votes are counted.

STATEMENT by Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge regarding ballot cure efforts in Nevada:
Culinary Union ran the largest program in Nevada to knock on over 1 million doors, including more than half of the Black and Latinx voters, and more than a third of Asian American voters in Nevada. We are now in the next phase of this campaign to ensure their votes are counted.
The Clark and Washoe County Registrars have notified voters about signature issues regarding approximately 9,600 ballots and encouraged voters to cure their ballots. Culinary Union is supporting that effort by following up with voters in the way we are best at: By having 1-on-1 conversations with Nevadans.
Culinary Union is running the largest signature cure effort statewide in Clark and Washoe Counties. 200 canvassers started curing the day after Election Day (Wednesday, November 9) and will continue daily through Monday, November 14, 2022 at 5pm.
Culinary Union is phone banking and canvassing full-time, organizers are also contacting hospitality workers on their lunch breaks in unionized casino resorts’ Employee Dining Rooms (EDRs) on the Las Vegas Strip.
Culinary Union is working in coalition with labor and community partners to cure ballots and ensure that Nevadans votes are counted. The Culinary Union’s cure program is provided generally to members and their families, there are also some general public voters in the universe.
The Culinary Union is doing everything we can to ensure Nevadans voices are heard and their votes are counted.

Culinary Union achieves major milestone, with the largest political program in Nevada, by knocking on over 1 million doors
450 canvassers knocked on more than half of the Black and Latinx voters and more than a third of AAPI voters statewide
Las Vegas, NV - UNITE HERE’s Culinary Union has surpassed previous and historic numbers by running the largest and strongest political program in Nevada. Statewide, 450 Culinary Union canvassers knocked on over 1 million doors and had over 175,000 conversations with voters.
The political team knocked on the doors of more than half of Black and Latinx voters and more than a third of the AAPI voters in Reno and Las Vegas. The average Culinary Union canvasser knocked on 60+ doors during their shift, with the entire team knocked on 20,000+ doors in Las Vegas and Reno everyday, 6-7 days a week since March 2022.
Culinary Union ran a digital video ad: “Governor Sisolak has our backs” on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter which has over 5 million views statewide across multiple platforms.
“We were proud to get out the vote for political leaders who continue to fight to protect working families by knocking on over 1 million doors statewide,” said Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union. “We have the most pro-worker representatives we have ever had in our lifetimes. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Congressional Representatives Dina Titus, Steven Horsford, and Susie Lee, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, and candidate for North Las Vegas Mayor, Pat Spearman fought for workers during the pandemic and we ran the largest effort in Nevada to get out the vote during the Midterms by knocking on the doors of half of the Black and Latinx voters and more than a third of Asian voters statewide. The biggest corporations have been using the pandemic to price gouge working families, but we have been fighting back. MAGA Republicans are not going to take on massive Wall Street landlords who are stealing our homes, evicting working families, and ruining our neighborhoods. Workers do not believe that Republicans, who are getting rich off of record oil profits and prescription drugs, are going to take on Big Oil or Big Pharma. As the votes continue to be counted, we will continue to take on Wall Street landlords, Big Oil, Big Pharma, and greedy corporations to win for working families.”
The Culinary Union, the largest affiliate of UNITE HERE, the strongest political force in the state, mobilized hundreds of thousands of Nevadans and immigrant voters (42,976 citizens were naturalized in Nevada from 2016-2020) during the 2022 Midterms to elect political leaders who will continue to fight for Nevadans.
Political canvassers reflect the Culinary Union’s diverse membership, which is majority women and people of color, and who are committed to organizing and winning economic and racial justice. The Culinary Union continues to drive turnout in Nevada because the union has worked for nearly nine decades to build worker power and strength. Each political effort draws from the Culinary Union’s 87 years of rich knowledge of effective and precise voter contact, which is rooted in the principle of working people talking to each other about the importance of building collective power through voting.
Culinary Union called on elected representatives to stand with working people and for the right to dignified affordable housing, and against corporate landlords that are getting rich off of evictions. As the largest organization of workers in Nevada, Culinary Union signed up tens of thousands of voters to support the passage of Neighborhood Stability at the county level.
*Prohibits rent increases for the first year of tenancy.
*Guarantees that rent increases are tied to CPI with a 5% yearly cap.
*Requires landlords to give 90-day notice on future rent increases.
*Includes commonsense exemptions for units built in the last 15 years and for mom/pop landlords who only own 1 unit or live in a multi-unit building.
The Culinary Union has consistently run the largest and strongest political program in Nevada and is running an even larger program in the 2022 political cycle. Each cycle, the Culinary Union has surpassed previous political efforts:
*2016: 300 canvassers knocked on 250,000 doors.
*2018: 350 canvassers knocked on 370,000 doors.
*2020: Culinary Union delivered Nevada for Biden/Harris and drove unprecedented turnout with the largest political team statewide. 500 canvassers knocked on 650,000 doors, including half of the Black and Latinx voters in Nevada.
*2022: Culinary Union continues to run the largest political program in Nevada. 400 canvassers who are on track to knock on 1 million doors statewide, including more than half of the Black and Latinx voters and more than a third of AAPI voters in the Battle Born State.
