Unions Reach Tentative Agreement with The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel
LAS VEGAS, NV – Two days before the strike deadline, the Culinary and Bartenders Unions’ negotiating committee reached a tentative agreement with The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel. The new 5-year contract is retroactive to June 1, 2013, if it is ratified by the workers. Workers will not strike The D on Sunday, June 1.
The latest settlement follows the standard of a fair agreement set by earlier deals with other Downtown casinos, including the Golden Nugget, Fremont, Main Street Station, and El Cortez.
“The new contract protects the union standard in Downtown Las Vegas,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union. “We are not done until all our members get a fair contract.”
“I’m glad that we have an agreement,” said Ron Gladstone, a kitchen steward at The D. “I will continue fighting until everyone else has the opportunity to provide for their family and will be joining the picket lines on June 1.”
“Workers have fought to preserve a good standard of living in Las Vegas,” said Dallamy Santos Mantecon, a housekeeper at The D. “These jobs are good jobs because we all work together to make Las Vegas a better place for everyone.”
At 5 a.m. on June 1, restaurant workers, hotel housekeepers, cocktail servers, bartenders, and other members of the unions at unsettled casinos will walk off their jobs and start 24/7 picketing of Four Queens, Binion’s, Plaza, Las Vegas Club, and Golden Gate unless fair agreements are reached. As of release date, there are over 1,000 union workers without a contract in Downtown Las Vegas.
Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 55,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 hospitality workers in gaming, hotel, and food service industries in North America.
