Culinary Union Launches New Website to Warn Travel Industry about Labor Dispute at Trump Hotel Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS – The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has recently launched www.VegasTravelAlert.org/Trump, a new website to educate and inform the travel industry about the serious ongoing and escalating labor dispute at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Employees of the Trump Hotel Las Vegas are calling on their boss, the Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump, and co-owner Phillip Ruffin to negotiate a fair union contract.
The billionaire owners have so far refused to start contract negotiations with their employees, even though over 57,000 union workers in Nevada have fair wages, job security, and good health benefits – in stark contrast to workers at the Trump Hotel Las Vegas who are paid approximately $3.00 less per hour in comparison to union workers on the Las Vegas Strip.
VegasTravelAlert.org/Trump will continually be updated with information for customers and the travel industry concerning the ongoing labor dispute. The Trump Hotel Las Vegas joins Station Casinos as two companies in the Las Vegas casino industry who continue be embroiled in labor unrest.
A majority of workers voted and won an election to unionize, but hotel management continually refuses to acknowledge the federally certified results. Trump Hotel Las Vegas have tried to negate their employees’ right to unionize and instead of recognizing the results of the federal government union election, hotel management has undertaken a hostile anti-union campaign.
Major demonstrations can and will happen at the Trump Hotel Las Vegas due to the major labor dispute. Thousands of demonstrators have protested at the steps of the luxury hotel. The Culinary Union highly recommends that customers relocate events to a venue free of labor unrest.
Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 57,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 workers in gaming, hotel, and food service industries in North America.
The Culinary Union is Nevada’s largest immigrant organization with over 57,000 members - a diverse membership that is approximately 55% women and 56% Latino. Members -who work as guest room attendants, bartenders, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks, and kitchen workers- come from 167 countries and speak over 40 different languages. The Culinary Union has been fighting for fair wages, job security, and good health benefits for working men and women in Nevada for over 80 years.
The Culinary Union is encouraging Nevada locals, political candidates, and tourists to avoid staying at/or patronizing hotels under an active labor dispute such as Station Casinos, Palms Casino Resort, and the Trump Hotel Las Vegas.
